Water has formed the Swabian Alb over the time. Three water springs of the Lenninger Lauter rise in the nature reserve "Oberes Lenninger Tal mit Seitentälern" (Upper Lenningen Valley with side valleys). In a geologically very short time, the river Lenninger Lauter has cut deeply into the rocks of the Alb and created an impressive river valley.
Here, the European watershed runs: The older river system of the Danube and the younger river system of the Rhine separate. The water of the Lenninger Lauter flows on towards Wendlingen, where it joins the Neckar and flows via the Rhine into the North Sea.
The two rivers Lauter should not be confused: The water of the Große Lauter, which rises in Gomadingen in the well-known valley "Großes Lautertal", flows into the Danube and eventually into the Black Sea.
