UGGp Swabian Alb and SDG 4

UNESCO - the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation - is the sponsor of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Programme. The name of the organisation already reflects the importance attached to education and science alongside culture. The tasks of the UNESCO Global Geoparks (UGGp) therefore include education as well as the protection of geological heritage and sustainable development. 

In the Swabian Alb UGGp, education and, in particular, education for sustainable development is seen as important. SDG 4 "Quality education" is therefore taken into account in all activities of the Geopark office. For example, the print products contain various information from the field of geo-education, the "Understanding" section of the website provides information on geoscientific phenomena, sustainability and other topics, and educational programmes for landscape guides, tourism experts and employees of the information centres and tourist information offices of the 190 municipalities deal with sustainability topics and approaches to education for sustainable development in addition to geo- and environmental education. The Geopark Schools project also starts where education is institutionalised in Germany - in schools. Schools within the Geopark Swabian Alb's sphere of influence that already have a geoscientific profile or are particularly interested in the natural environment of the Swabian Alb can apply to become a Geopark School.
